I have tried not to view this new generation of Hip Hop as a bunch of disrespectful, uneducated, and ignorant children who has no self worth or direction....and then Lil Wayne does this. According to reports
(because I damn sure don't listen to his music so I couldn't tell you), he referenced Emmett Till, a black youth killed in 1955 for supposedly whistling at a white woman.
Its appalling that Lil Wayne( a young black man from the SOUTH of all places) would be so damn disrespectful to Emmett Till's memory. And to think, this is probably your son's role model....I fear for my black men daily. How can we demand respect from other cultures, when we won't even respect our own? The simple fact that he felt at ease displaying the disrespect publicly speaks volumes about the current state of our community. Yes, I understand he does not represent ALL of hip hop, but is currently one of the most vocal voices of the genre. It would have been great for him to use his platform for better, but at the end of the day, the general consensus seems to be to get money at all costs. Shock value=shocking sales and we all know he has MANY mouths to feed.
Here's a great video put together by Emmett Till's mother, Mamie Till Mobley. It features Mrs. Mobley herself, Rev Al Sharpton, various interviews with relatives and eyewitnesses, and facts about the racial atmosphere of 1955. Enjoy the rest of Black History Month, and PLEASE educate your children...so that I don't have to talk about them in future posts after their ignorance embarrasses the hell outta you.
